What the Stripes Actually Are

Rainwater running over the front lip carries oxidised aluminium, roof grit and airborne pollutants with it, and that mixture bonds electrostatically to the baked enamel finish. It is chemically attached, not sitting on top. Soap and pressure will not lift it — the surface has to be treated with a purpose-made gutter cleanser, agitated by hand along the full length of the run and then rinsed. It is slow work, which is why most house-washing companies skip it or charge separately.

The Process

Rinse and Assess

The face is rinsed down and we check how deep the staining goes. Badly oxidised gutters will improve dramatically but will not come back to factory white, and we say so before starting.

Apply the Cleanser

A gutter-specific product is applied to the front face and left to dwell. Household detergents and pressure alone do not break the bond.

Hand Agitation

Every foot of the front face is worked by hand with a soft brush. This is the part that takes the time and the part that produces the result.

Full Rinse Down

The face, the siding below it and any windows are rinsed clean so nothing is left to dry into a new streak.

Finish With the Inside

Whitening pairs naturally with a clean-out — there is no sense making the outside look new while the trough is still full.
